The slash menu
Since 0.12.0Type / at the start of a line, or after a space, to open the slash menu.
Keep typing to filter it: /ta finds Table, /h2 finds Heading 2.
Use the arrow keys to move through the list, Enter to run the
highlighted command, and Esc to close the menu. Running a
command removes the / and what you typed after it.
The menu doesn’t open inside words or paths, so and/or, /files/photo.png
and links are typed as usual. If what you typed doesn’t start any command’s
name, Enter starts a new line instead, so /usr followed by
Enter stays as text.
Opening it without typing / Since 0.15.0
In Preview, an empty line with the cursor on it shows a gray Type / to insert elements hint. The hint isn’t part of the note, and it goes as soon as you type. It doesn’t show in code blocks or tables.
Point at a block in Preview and a + appears to the left of its drag
grip. Click it to open the menu at the end of that block, with nothing
typed. Type to filter it as usual (h2 rather than /h2). A command that
works on a line, such as Heading 2 or Quote, turns that block: on a
heading it acts on the heading’s own line, and on a list item on that
item’s first line. On a code block, table or math block, the menu opens on
a new empty line below it. Esc closes the menu and leaves the
note as it was.
Neither shows while the slash menu is turned off in Settings, while you’re suggesting, or in Source.
What’s in the menu
| Group | Commands |
|---|---|
| Text | Heading 1–6 (Since 0.13.0 for 4–6), Number headings Since 0.15.0 (in a note), bullet list, numbered list, checklist, quote, inline code and code block Since 0.13.0 |
| Insert | Table (3 × 3), callout (pick note, tip, important, warning or caution next), link, link to note, database view, image or file, task with due date, tasks for a day Since 0.20.0, tag, emoji, and in a slides deck Apply layout… |
| Review | Comment on the current line |
| Plugins | A block for each enabled diagram plugin, such as Mermaid or draw.io |
| Fields | Each of your fields, such as now |
Some commands depend on where you are:
- Task with due date and Comment need text on the line. The comment is anchored on the whole line.
- Table, Code block, Database view and diagram blocks aren’t available while you’re suggesting. They’re shown dimmed, with the reason.
- Image or file and diagram blocks need an open note.
A heading leaves an empty heading line with the cursor after its #
marks and a gray hint naming its level, such as Heading 2, until you
type. The hint isn’t part of the note. Since 0.13.0
Inline formatting such as bold or italic isn’t in the menu. Use its keyboard shortcut or the toolbar.
Emoji
Emoji (Insert group, or /emoji) opens an emoji picker at the cursor.
Type in its search box to filter, or browse the Recent row and the
category tabs. Use the arrow keys and Enter, or click, to insert
an emoji.
You can also type : and two or more letters, such as :rocket, to get
emoji suggestions. The : has to start the line or follow a space or (,
so 10:30 and http:// are typed as usual, and there are no suggestions
inside code. Enter picks the highlighted emoji when what you typed
starts its shortcode, or after you’ve moved through the list with the arrow
keys; otherwise it starts a new line. To turn these suggestions off, turn off
Emoji suggestions when typing : in Settings → General. Like the slash
menu setting, it’s stored on this computer only.
An emoji is saved in the note as the character itself, not as a :rocket:
shortcode, so it looks the same in any editor and on GitHub. Your system’s
emoji picker works too: CtrlCmdSpace on
macOS, Win. on Windows.
Turning it off
Turn off Slash command menu in Settings → General. This setting is stored on this computer only, not in the vault, so it doesn’t change the menu for your collaborators.
